Plastic alternatives: cork as a structural and decorative substitute

Where cork agglomerates meaningfully replace plastic in product design and packaging.

Portuguese cork · since 1987

Plastic substitution is rarely one-to-one. Cork wins where the application values low density, tactile warmth and end-of-life biodegradability. It is competitive in product casings, fitness accessories, packaging inserts and footwear soles.

Where cork does not yet compete is in transparent or fully waterproof applications. The honest specifier matches material to function, and uses cork where its strengths align.
